Grades 3-4

Is it magic, or is it science? Our budding scientists will be investigating several seemingly magical events and discover if they really are magic – or if there is more happening than meets the eye. Come see why slime is attracted to magnets, and so much more!

Grades 5-6

Certain tricks of the mind or illusions can be quite mysterious and help magicians appear to defy natural forces (such as gravity) and do the impossible!  Students in this FUNshop (5-6th grade) will become Magician Apprentices who will explore  a few ‘sleight of hand’ tricks and 3D optical illusions, both of which are frequently used by Magicians.  Participants will build a device that will allow them to perform a floating object trick right from their own hands!!  They will test how effective their device is and identify factors that influence how well the trick works!! This investigation will help them perfect the delivery of their trick. Additionally, students will build and test a device that allows them to create and visualize holographic-like images.  Along the way, students will discover some of the underlying STEM principles which allow these illusions to even exist!
