When Modern Was: A Dialogue with Past and Present

  • April 04, 2019
  • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
  • Driehaus Museum, Chicago

Every age has seen Modernism challenge the status quo in the arts, and redefine how audiences perceive “Classical” aesthetics. In the 17th century, musical modernism took the form of a wild new style - the Stylus Phantasticus - that pushed conventional genres and techniques to their limits. Experience this groundbreaking music through such visionary composers as Buxtehude, Biber, and Schmelzer, Telemann, and Bach.

Hear from Executive Director, Richard P. Townsend and explore how the Driehaus Museum, in its 10th year, is looking forward by pushing its own boundaries, questioning the status quo, and inspiring a whole new generation with its contemporary art initiative, A Tale of Today.
