Coping with the Climate Crisis:
Insights & Tools for the Gifted

How might the climate crisis affect the gifted? How can gifted people cope with our unprecedented planetary predicament? How might gifted individuals contribute to much-needed cultural transformation(s) in an emotionally-sustainable manner? This SENGinar will be guided by these types of questions.

I will start my presentation by briefly describing the contemporary climate emergency. Next, I will draw on giftedness literature to illustrate how gifted individuals’ heightened awareness, sensitivity, and intensity may mean they are particularly susceptible to experiencing difficult emotions like eco-anxiety & eco-grief. Finally—and, making up the bulk of my talk—I will provide attendees with a wide variety of insights and tools to help them cope with the climate crisis and discover how they can contribute to much-needed cultural transformation(s) in an emotionally-sustainable manner.

About the Presenter:

Eric is a Registered Psychotherapist, educator, writer, and (re)searcher who recently completed a PhD in the field of Ecopsychology. Eric’s dissertation explores how gifted adults experience ecological self (i.e., nature connectedness)—and how such experiences relate to both mental health and pro-environmental behavior. Eric currently dedicates much of his time to a nature-infused counseling & coaching private practice. He is also an adjunct professor of geography and environmental studies.
