What Is NLD, Nonverbal Learning Disability: Could This Be My Child?

Marcia Eckerd, Ph.D is a licensed psychologist who provides services for parents and schools pertaining to students with autism spectrum disorders, NLD, ADHD and executive function issues. Dr. Eckerd is the author of many articles including blogs for the Smart Kids newsletter. She is a member of the CT ASD Advisory Council, Clinical Advisory Group of the Asperger’s Autism Network, the Board of Directors of NeuroClastic, and the Professional Advisory Board of Smart Kids with LD.

Children with NLD (Nonverbal Learning Disorder) may learn to read and memorize with ease, yet face challenges in social, organizational and motor skills. Dr. Eckerd will explain what NLD is (and isn't).  She will discuss how we recognize children with NLD, who have difficulty with social interaction and understanding "the big picture," what the underlying issues are, and how parents can help their NLD children. 

The focus will be on understanding NLD and for parents to come away with practical solutions to frequent issues - including how to handle these children’s lack of flexibility, their tendency to miss social signals, and their vulnerability to being misunderstood, taken advantage or bullied.
