Celebrating Frances Glessner Lee, the Mother of Forensic Science

  • March 25, 2024
  • 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
  • Glessner House, Chicago

In honor of Women’s History Month and the 146th birthday of Frances Glessner Lee (born March 25, 1878), Glessner House is pleased to present our annual exploration of her fascinating Nutshell Studies of Unexplained Death. Lee achieved national and international recognition for her pioneering work in forensic science, creating the Nutshell Studies to train police and medical examiners how to investigate a scene of unexplained death.

Our presentation will be given by three speakers. Actor and Glessner descendant Oliver Wadsworth will join us virtually to discuss his work on a new play exploring Lee’s fascinating career including the creation of the Nutshells.

Author Frances McNamara will be on hand to give a PowerPoint presentation on her second mystery novel based on the Nutshells, Three Decker Murder in a Nutshell. Copies of the book, released in January 2024, will be available for purchase and signing.

Glessner House Executive Director and Curator William Tyre will then lead the audience on an exploration of one of the Nutshells. Together, we will try to determine what happened - was it accidental, natural causes, suicide, . . . or murder?!?

Schedule:
6:00 - 6:30pm - birthday cake and book signing
6:30 - 8:00pm - program

$15 per person / $12 for Glessner House members
