Family Day: Paper Quilting Workshop

  • April 13, 2024
  • 12:00 PM - 2:00 PM
  • Museum of Contemporary Photography, Chicago

Families are invited for an artmaking workshop in creating paper quilts. Guests are invited to bring their own family photographs, inspired by Wendy Red Star’s collages that weave photographs of her family into Apsáalooke star quilt patterns.

This workshop will be led by artist Jason Wesaw, an enrolled member of the Potawatomi Nation in the Great Lakes region of the United States. Wesaw’s multi-disciplinary art practice includes ceramics, textiles and works on paper to blur the boundaries between mediums by applying techniques more often associated with a different art form.

Advance registration is strongly suggested. Click here for complete details and registration.

About Jason Wesaw:

Jason Wesaw is a multi-disciplinary artist, exhibiting works in an array of media including ceramics, textiles, works on paper, and traditional cultural pieces. His projects relate stories about the Potawatomi people’s ancient and evolving connection to the Land, the Sky, the Water, and Beyond. He balances being an artist with working in his Tribal community as a Peacemaker and participating in traditional cultural ceremonies across the Great Lakes.

Jason is Potawatomi (Turtle Clan) and is raising his three children near the historic Pokagon Potawatomi settlement of Rush Lake in southwestern Michigan. His work is in the permanent collections of the Eiteljorg Museum (IN), Grand Valley State University (MI), the University of Notre Dame (IN), and the Field Museum (IL), and many other regional institutions. He is currently a Mellon Artist-in-Residence at the Newberry Library (Chicago, IL), researching and preparing new work for the upcoming Indigenous Chicago exhibition. His first European show at Rainmaker Gallery (United Kingdom) in the Fall of 2022 was a sold-out crowd favorite and he is a core artist for the upcoming Woven Being exhibition at The Block Museum of Art at Northwestern University.

This program is produced in conjunction with the Native America: In Translation exhibition organized by Aperture and curated by Wendy Red Star.
