2015 SENG Diversity Series, Part I
Families and their Gifted Children:

Developing Talent and Advocating for their Own
Presented by Dr. Joy Lawson Davis

This webinar will provide an overview of research and exemplary practices as related to family engagement with gifted learners. A special emphasis will be placed on the talent development and advocacy strategies of culturally diverse families who have raised successful gifted children. Focus on culturally relevant strategies as well as improving the connections between schools and families will be discussed.

There is research evidence that recognizing racial and cultural differences of gifted learners and teaching students to have positive racial identity impacts school success. All families, including those from diverse backgrounds are their children’s greatest champions. It is in the home that a learner’s multiple and complex identities are developed. Parents and family members play a critical role in this development. With gifted learners, family cohesion and the ability to teach independence have been noted as having impact on positive school success. Teaching families the importance of the talent development and advocacy roles has the potential to benefit student life outcomes. Enabling school personnel to better understand cultural difference in families will contribute to those outcomes.
