Lecturers

The Birds – Saturday, June 20th at 2:00pm
*Presented with Josh Engel, Ornithologist

Josh Engel has been watching birds for as long as he can remember. Fortunately, watching The Birds as a child only enhanced his fascination with them. Currently an ornithologist at The Field Museum, he has done bird-related field work and led birdwatching trips all over the world.

Arachnophobia – Sunday, July 12th at 12:30pm
*Presented with Crystal Maier, Collection Manager of Insects at The Field Museum

Crystal Maier is the Collection Manager of Insects at The Field Museum, where she manages the day-to-day needs of the over 12 million preserved, dead insects. She is a sort of librarian for bugs, loaning out the Field Museum’s insect specimens to scientists all over the world, facilitating entomological research that spans a wide variety of subjects, from pollinator surveys to discovery of new species in the Amazon. Her own research focuses on the evolution of an obscure group of water beetles called the “Riffle Beetles”, and she uses them to answer questions about water quality and the evolution of wood-boring habits in beetles. She has described over 25 species that are entirely new to science.

Tickets are $10 each
