Sir Arthur Conan Doyle/Sherlock Holmes Symposium

  • October 24, 2015
  • 9:00 AM
  • The Newberry, Chicago
The Sir Arthur Conan Doyle symposium commemorates the remarkable collection of written works and memorabilia of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle contained in the Newberry Library’s C. Frederick Kittle Collection of Doyleana by exploring Conan Doyle’s writings and life, and his era. This year’s event will feature the following speakers.

Jill Gage, Newberry Library
Welcome and Introduction
“The Adventure of the C. Frederick Kittle Collection at the Newberry”

Zach Dundas, Author, Reporter, and Editor
“Cracking the Casebook”
Investigating the epic story of Sherlock Holmes from Conan Doyle to Cumberbatch. In his new book The Great Detective, journalist Zach Dundas set out to trace the evolution of Sherlock Holmes in popular culture. The tale combines real-world reportage, a dash of memoir, and occasional outbreaks of scholarship. In this talk, we’ll examine one writer’s attempt to weave interviews, primary-document research, Arthur Conan Doyle’s original stories, and his own ill-advised excursion into the frozen wastes of Dartmoor into a chronicle of Sherlock Holmes’s 130 years so far.

Tim Johnson, U. of Minnesota Library
“Is it Always 1895?”
Building library research collections involves many things, including a bit of detective work. In this talk Tim Johnson, E. W. McDiarmid Curator of the Sherlock Holmes Collections at the University of Minnesota, will explore past and present adventures in collecting that include elements of detection. As the tale unfolds, we’ll meet heroes (and perhaps a villain or two). Looking toward the future–and playing on Vincent Starrett’s famous Sherlockian sonnet–we’ll also investigate a few clues that might challenge later day detective-collectors.
