Temple Grandin comes to the Glenbard Parent Series to offer, information, inspiration and hope. Temple Grandin, Ph.D., is the most accomplished and well-known adult with autism in the world. Dr. Grandin is an author, animal scientist and autism self-advocate who encourages and motivates others through her story. She didn't talk until she was almost four - communicating her frustration by screaming, and humming. In 1950, she was diagnosed with autism and her parents were told she should be institutionalized. Dr. Grandin recounts “groping her way from the far side of darkness” in her book Emergence: Labeled Autistic, a book that stunned the world because - until its publication - most assumed that an autism diagnosis allowed for no potential for achievement or productivity in life.

Fortunately for Temple Grandin, during her young school years she found a mentor who recognized her interests and abilities, and helped her launch a highly successful academic career. She was the first person to publicly share insights into autism, and is the inventor of the “Hug Box” - a device that helps people on the autism spectrum calm themselves. Dr. Grandin later developed her unique talents into a successful career as a livestock-handling equipment designer - one of very few such experts in the world - and she currently works as a Professor of Animal Science at Colorado State University.  

Dr. Grandin, an internationally acclaimed speaker on autism, has enjoyed numerous recognitions by the media, and her fascinating life, with all its challenges and successes, was been brought to the screen starring Claire Danes. In 2010 Time magazine named Dr. Grandin as one of the “100 Most Influential People in the World” in the “Heroes” category.
