Fermilab Family Picnic

Meet with other CGCC families for a casual picnic on the grounds of Fermilab in Batavia.

Before the picnic, perhaps your family would like to participate in one of the many interesting activities taking place at Fermilab on November 5th. Choose one or more of these activities if you like, before meeting up with other CGCC families for the picnic.  Please note, some of these options have age restrictions, most require advanced registration and some require a fee.

Some options include:

  • 9 a.m. - 11 a.m.:  Stewards Workday: volunteer effort to process native seed mixes and remove invasive species from around the Fermilab site. Contact coordinator at 630-840-4845 to determine meeting location.

  • 10 a.m. - 12 noon: Get to Know the Lederman Science Center. Families meet a docent at the Center for a guided tour of exhibits that explore Fermilab science from a kid's point of view. The exhibits are geared for middle school students. Register here
  • 9 a.m. - 12 noon: Science Adventure: What Makes You So Special? Genetic traits, DNA and chromosomes all play a part in who you are. Through hands-on activities you will learn about several genetic traits that are passed from parent to child. Discover how your body uses the amazing system to make you grow and function. Investigate some ways scientists, doctors and investigators use information from human DNA. Registration and fee required.  Class filling up fast!!!
  • 9 a.m. - 3 p.m.: Visit the exhibit and viewing areas on the 15th floor of Wilson Hall.  Just sign in at the reception desk in the atrium of Wilson Hall and explore the exhibits. No registration required.
  • 8 a.m. - 6 p.m.: You’re welcome to hike in the 6,800-acre public areas, visit the herd of bison, fish in the ponds (with a valid Illinois fishing license), ride bikes and take photographs.
A photo ID is required to enter the site.
