IAGC Convention Parents Session

  • February 04, 2017
  • 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM
  • Chicago Marriott Naperville
This year's IAGC Convention concludes with a full Saturday morning of presentations for parents.  Complete information is available at the very end of the IAGC Convention brochure at www.iagcgifted.org/images/stories/pdf/2017-convention-schedule.pdf.

The morning begins with Intellectual Giftedness: It's More Than Being Smart by Jim Delisle, noted author, gifted educator and former professor of gifted education. He has written a dozen books on raising gifted children, including Gifted Kids Survival Guide, Parenting Gifted Kids, and Dumbing Down America. The morning concludes with a presentation by Kathy Nilles, manager of parent services for the National Association for Gifted Children (NAGC), on 10 Essential Tips for Ensuring Your Gifted Child's Success

Between these presentations, there are two sets of breakout sessions to choose from.

Session one includes:

An Introduction to Raising Gifted Children-Gifted 101 presented by our own Newenka DuMont.

Gasp! I Could Never Homeschool! (Yes, yes you can!) presented by Jen Merrill, curator of the Laughing at Chaos blog and author of the very funny If This Is a Gift, Can I Send It Back?: Surviving in the Land of the Gifted and Twice Exceptional

Emotional Literacy-Managing Intensity in Gifted Children and Adults presented by Kimberlee King, educational consultant for families of gifted and twice exceptional students with Inspired Attention.

Session two includes:

A Parent's Role in Educating a Gifted Child: Advocacy presented by Newenka DuMont.

Fostering Critical Thinking Skills at Home presented by Lemi-Ola Erinkitola, award-winning educator and author focused on empowering parents and their children through her tutoring and consulting practice, The Critical Thinking Child LLC, and her foundation, Children’s Reading Foundation of Greater Chicago.

Perfectionism and Motivation presented by Michele Kane, professor of special education at Northeastern Illinois University.

Cost for participation is $60.  Click here to register.  Or you can come without registering and pay cash at registration.

A group of parents will be gathering after the presentations for a casual luncheon nearby at around 12:30. If you are interested in joining us, please register for the luncheon here, so that we can reserve enough room for the whole group!

The full IAGC convention runs Thursday and Friday, February 3 and 4, 2017.  Parents are always invited to participate in the convention, not just the parents' session.  For more information about IAGC or the convention in general, please see the IAGC website:  www.iagcgifted.org
