Growing Changemakers

"Only power that springs from the weakness of the oppressed will be sufficiently strong to free both (the oppressed and the oppressor)." ~ Freire

Many schools are not designed to be responsive to the way gifted children experience the world and therefore, to a certain degree, oppress them. The paradoxical strength in gifted children's sensitivities is a source of power that can transform unjust systems; however, these same sensitivities can render gifted learners particularly vulnerable. Gifted students born with social justice genes deserve preparation for the arduous nature of the changemaker journey. Today's political reality is not congruent with the just and peaceful society our children dream of and yearn to co-create. Youth need to know when we push against an inequitable system, it pushes back. Together we can expedite equity by defining what it means to be a changemaker, explaining obstacles to expect along the way and sharing proven practices that support evolution. Please join us in supporting youth in being the change they wish to realize in the world.

About the Presenter

Kate Bachtel, President of SENG, has served diverse gifted students in a variety of contexts and school settings. She founded SoulSpark Learning, an education innovation firm, to support youth and educators dedicated to accelerating positive social change. Prior to launching SoulSpark, she co-led the successful opening of a K-8 school with a holistic vision for educating gifted learners. Kate has also worked as a talented and gifted education advisor within her local public school district and as a director of a summer program for gifted youth. Her teaching and leadership practices have been recognized with speaking invitations at various conferences and events across the country. She is grateful to parent two complex, empathic and highly curious children and has yet to meet a student who is “too much” for her.
