In the inaugural Barbara and David Kipper South Asian Lecture Series, renowned scholar Dr. George Michell examines Islamic architecture in the Deccan and discusses his much-anticipated new book.

Dr. Michell’s lecture will focus on the architectural achievements of the Muslim rulers of the Deccan region of peninsular India, which are among the most impressive and gorgeously decorated buildings in the Muslim world. They testify to the immense wealth of the Deccan sultans like the Qutb Shahis of Golconda-Hyderabad and highlight the cultural refinements of their courts in the 16th and 17th centuries.

Michell, a distinguished historian of Indian architecture, studied architecture in Melbourne and Indian art and archaeology at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London. He has conducted research at numerous heritage sites in India, including more than 20 years documenting the ruins of Hampi Vijayanagara with the American archaeologist Dr. John M. Fritz. Based in London, he is a founding trustee of the Deccan Heritage Foundation.

Among his many publications are The Hindu Temple (1988), The Penguin Guide to the Monuments of India (1999), Architecture and Art of the Deccan Sultanates (1999), Falaknuma Palace, Hyderabad (2011), and Mansions of Chettinad (2017).
