How do classifications inform our understanding of artworks from Classical antiquity? How did labels shape the formation of the history of Greek art? In this lecture Milette Gaifman, associate professor in the history of art and classics at Yale University, explores the fundamental role of the classificatory act in our viewing of Greek art and architecture in the modern era.

The Bross family generously endowed the Louise Smith Bross Lecture series at the University of Chicago to support related, corresponding lectures at the university and the Art Institute. The Louise Smith Bross Memorial Fund sponsors a triennial series of lectures on aspects of pre-1800 European art and architecture by scholars of international reputation. The gift also subsidizes the publication of the lectures by the University of Chicago Press.

This lecture is open to the public and all are welcome. Please use the Michigan Avenue entrance. Two additional lectures will be offered at the University of Chicago on May 14 and 15.
