The class for all students who wish to empower themselves through math! The beginning of each year entails defining the goals for the upcoming year, for the course and how they want to straddle it. Sarah will then look over their curriculum with them, assisting them to set some mid-term goals and a focused goal for the following week (an "assignment," if you will).  Every week, one or two lucky students will have the opportunity to present an fascinating problem they've encountered upon their math adventure. Then, Sarah will assist students in  grading the assignment they chose for themselves the previous week, identify and fix any problems, help with areas of misunderstandings, and set a new case to be cracked for the following week.

This is a BYOC (Bring Your Own Curriculum) class! Sarah will work with any algebra curriculum you wish for your child, as long as (a) we don't have to fail attempting to stream a video during the class (the church's wifi won't really feel like supporting this) and (b) there are problems your child can work on using paper and a answers book to assist with grading. Life of Fred and Singapore Math are two fantastic series that many homeschooled students have found useful, as they are designed for students learning independently through reading the books and working the problems without a lecture component, but there are many others available; Sarah would be glad to discuss and advise if you are uncertain what curriculum to buy.

The last portion of each class will be devoted to math games, tricks, and puzzles!

Minimum/maximum number of students: 4/6

Age range:  8-12

Price: $15.50, for math games and manipulatives.

Teacher: Sarah Alexander

Sarah Alexander is a certified (certifiable?) math nerd who plays with equations for fun. She sees math everywhere in the world (and places beyond), and loves to show people how cool math can be.
