In this presentation, Alec Ross will discuss the challenges that teenagers typically face and offer parents and guardians strategies to help them navigate these difficult years. He will discuss:

  • Stress, both in its tolerable and toxic form, and the impact it has on the body, brain, and development of individuals
  • Current dangers faced by today's teens, including vaping, e-cigarettes, and other substances
  • Protective factors and risk factors that impact coping and resiliency
  • Strategies for parents, teachers, and counselors to assist in the development of positive assets
  • Additional resources to help support and guide adolescents

Alec Ross graduated from the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration and is a licensed clinical social worker and certified substance abuse counselor. He has worked in the field for over 38 years. He currently is the Clinical Director at Providence Farm and in private practice with Transcend Counseling Associates. In addition, he is an adjunct faculty member at Loyola University in the Graduate School of Social Work and at the Institute for Clinical Social Work where he teaches Substance Abuse Treatment. He has had extensive experience consulting with various mental health agencies, communities, and schools in the areas of: Social/Emotional Learning; program development and group work; substance abuse prevention and intervention; and, suicide prevention and intervention. He has developed innovative workshops and presentations for parents, students, and professionals on a variety of topics concerning the well-being of youth. Alec works with adolescents and adults in individual, family, couple, and group counseling.

Our First Friday Speaker Series provides a forum for experts and members of the community to meet and informally discuss topics of interest.

The Tyree Institute provides outreach programming on adolescent development, educational practices, and learning differences.
