Homeschool Spelling Bee

  • January 16, 2020
  • 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
  • Midwest Academy for Gifted Education, Chicago

Please note that a designated caregiver has to stay on site for all programs.

MAGE is hosting a HOMESCHOOL SPELLING BEE on Thursday, January 16th, 10AM-2PM and this requires a registration.

Description: The Scripps Spelling Bee is an annual national spelling bee contest. Our bee winner will progress to the citywide competition. We limit registration to the first 10 students at every grade. Please use Chicago Public Schools Age cut offs for grades. If your student is accelerated, you can’t compete at age-grade in the national bee, fyi.

The top winner from each grade can move up to the next grade’s run. The top 3 winners from each grade will receive a certificate. All participants will receive a participation certificate.

Rules: vocabulary is not required for our bee. You must live in Illinois and be a homeschooling family. Once you register, you will be sent a confirmation and the rules, along with a payment link. The first 10 people to complete payment and registration per grade can be in the bee, therefore we are limiting the Bee to about 80 students. This is our first year so we anticipate that there will be 10-15 students in total. Once you sign up and pay, we will send you your study words and the official rules.

The 1 finalist will be moving on to the 03-10-2020 9:00AM Bee in Chicago, IL.

There is no minimum age for the spelling bee. We will let parents use their best judgement about the minimum age of participation. Parents, remember that this is supposed to be fun. If your child is not typically the kind that loves being put on a spot in front of people, consider that before signing up please. It is also not an activity for every temperament.

Price: $21 credit card, $16 check (can be mailed or dropped off). Day of registrations will be okay if there is space for the grade. We need at least 10 kids to sign up to run this event.

Dates: Thursday, January 16th, 10AM-2PM

9:30AM 1-2rd grade (or younger) check in. Competition starts at 10 AM with 1st grade.

10:30AM 3-4th grade check in. We anticipate that 3rd grade will start at 11AM.

11:30AM 5-6th grade check in. We anticipate that 5th grade will start at 12PM.

12:30PM 7-8th grade check in. We anticipate that 7th grade will start at 1PM.

Just in case, the event will go until 2PM or until such time that we have a winner.

Required Supplies: personal water bottle. Lunch or snacks. We are a NUT-FREE facility. Please, no eating while it’s your turn to spell.

Price Does Not Include:

  • We accept checks and prefer that form of payment. There is a $25 bounced check fee.

Refunds: no refunds, we are a small not for profit and don’t have a commercial sponsor for this event yet.

This class has 80 spaces. There will not be more than 12 children participating at any one time and we designed the program to make sure that we don’t exceed 25 students on site by spacing out the age groups. We have been told that it takes about 10 minutes to get through the younger grades.
