Path to Selective Colleges

  • February 27, 2022
  • 3:00 PM - 6:00 PM
  • Online

The "Path to Selective Colleges" online workshop, by Susan Goodkin (California Learning Strategies Center),  helps your 9th or 10th grader understand what they need to do to get into selective colleges -- and get started doing it! -- in a hands-on, interactive, and fun environment. (Parents are welcome to attend too!)

Many of her students who are accepted to selective colleges -- including the Ivies and Stanford -- have one thing in common.

They started thinking early in high school about what they needed to do to improve their odds of getting into selective colleges -- and they avoided the mistakes that make it harder to get in.

And a lot of the time, they were more willing to listen to advice when it wasn't coming from mom or dad.

(As parents, we've all been there!)

In this workshop, we'll cover topics including:

  • How students can build a high school record that makes their application stand out, even at top schools, by pursuing their genuine interests in fun and unique ways -- rather than feeling pressured to do all the "usual" activities students think colleges want to see.
  • Understanding the college application process, so students know what's important -- and what isn't! -- for college admissions.
  • What students need to know about curriculum, GPA and standardized testing requirements.
  • How to find, apply for, and win scholarships early in high school for talents including writing, the arts, videography and much more -- you don't have to be a top student to win scholarship money throughout high school, and winning scholarships looks great on college applications!
  • The college search process -- including an introduction to options beyond the Ivies that are great for strong students.
  • We'll be bringing in students who have started the kinds of projects that help applicants stand out -- from literary journals to podcasts to international discussion groups. Hearing from peers who have successfully tackled ambitious projects inspires students to dream big!
  • We'll have guest experts talk about standardized testing, and how to thrive in high school despite the stress many students face.
  • Finally, students will learn by doing: participants will create a personalized action plan based on their academic and extracurricular interests, will find and apply for a scholarship (scholarships can be added to the "honors" section on college applications!), will carry out a college search, and more!

Instructor: National college consultant Susan Goodkin has an extraordinary success rate helping students get admitted to the Ivies and Stanford. Her students are admitted at a rate that is nearly 6 times as high as the national acceptance rate!

Susan has also helped many students get admitted to other highly selective colleges including MIT, Cal Tech, Duke, U.Chicago, Vanderbilt, Tufts, Berkeley, UCLA, Amherst, Northwestern, Johns Hopkins and Oxford.

Susan is a graduate of Harvard University, Harvard Law School, and Oxford University, where she was a Rhodes Scholar.
