Using picture books, the class aims to tap into and develop children’s philosophical experience. Already replete with philosophical meaning, children have strong, even visceral, intuitions of what is beautiful and ugly, fair and unfair, right and wrong. They enjoy playing with language and are intrigued by logical puzzles. Every week, guided by a story and the pictures of a book that will be read in class, the young philosophers will be guided into a deeper dialog on topics like the nature of knowledge, truth, fairness, justice, beauty, friendship and environmental philosophy. A hands on project may accompany a specific topic. 'Homework' will consist of a reaction/reflection piece to the in class discussion, in the child's chosen medium. If willing, children may share their work with the class the week following. Presentations are gently encouraged but not required.
