The Shakespeare Project of Chicago: 50-Minute Romeo and Juliet, and 50-Minute Hamlet

Ruggles Hall, Free, No registration required. Click here for details.

Adapted by Barbara Zahora, Michelle Shupe and Peter Garino, “50-Minute Romeo and Juliet” presents an abridged telling of Shakespeare’s most enduring love story that places an enhanced emphasis on the journey of the star-crossed lovers. Utilizing four actors, two who play Romeo and Juliet and two who play all other supporting roles, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago’s “50-Minute Romeo and Juliet” contains many of the Bard’s most famous lines and speeches while retaining much of his saga’s pathos, poetry, and passion.

Adapted by Jeff Christian, “50-Minute Hamlet” presents Shakespeare’s most enduring tragedy. Utilizing just two actors, this abridged version illuminates the play’s most important scenes and characters. Since its premier in 2002, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago has presented it to great acclaim, especially among students and teachers.

Founded in 1996, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago was created to bring to life the words of William Shakespeare and the world’s other great dramatists; to foster the talents of members of Actors’ Equity Association, the professional union of actors and stage managers; and to present the plays to members of our community for free. Since 2003, the Shakespeare Project of Chicago has presented Saturday morning performances at the Newberry Library. Join us for Othello, the first performance this season.

Also performed on September 14 at the Wilmette Public Library.
