Lighting Design

SATURDAY IN THE STUDIO are studio-based workshops rooted in design challenges, hands-on creative exercises and communication skills for Chicago-area high school students.

As days become shorter and the lights of the city begin to appear what better time than November to look at the importance of lighting in the built environment. Lights can set a mood or tone, or create delight for people who inhabit an area or space. Designers use lighting to strengthen the aesthetics of a room, to influence the attitudes of passersby, or simply make spaces safer and more enjoyable to work in.

At CAF Teen Studio we are working with lighting designers to come up with projects that use lighting to create joy and incite curiosity. Along the way teens will learn about the components of light fixtures, how they are assembled, and then design a fixture based on their own design. We will also experiment with materials and connections taking function and aesthetics into consideration. At the end of the studio these designers and professionals can answer questions and describe the critical part they play within architecture and design.
