Sensory processing refers to the way that our bodies take in sensory information and produce appropriate motor and behavioral responses. Gifted individuals often experience sensory information in ways that differ significantly from others. Sometimes these differences are just extremes
related to overexcitabilities but other times there may be one or more sensory processing disorders impacting on task performance or behaviors. In either case, using sensory tools appropriately can help regulate mood, reduce anxiety and organize behaviors for success in daily activities.

Presenter, Debra Johnson, MS, OTR/L is the owner and director of STEPS for Kids, providing OT, PT and speech therapy services specializing in serving children with sensory processing disorders and related conditions. She has been an OT for 23 years and is certified in sensory integration
assessment and intervention. The mother of a gifted boy with
overexcitabilities and sensory differences, she understands the challenges and joys of parenting gifted children. Her journey with her own son has fueled her passion to address the needs of gifted children with sensory
differences and disorders.
