Family Program - It's a Wrap: Bird Mummies (ages 12+)

  • February 03, 2013
  • 1:30 PM
  • Oriental Institute, The University of Chicago

Birds were important to Ancient Egyptians in many different ways: they were an important part of the economy, a food source, the Hieroglyphic alphabet, and their religion. Many gods took the form of birds, like Horus (a falcon), Thot (an ibis), and Amun (a goose). People worshiped these animals, built temples in their honor, and mummified them like kings! On February 3rd, come learn about the religious beliefs and burial customs of Ancient Egyptians, and how all mummies, including birds and humans, were made. We’ll have a tour of the new Heaven and Earth exhibit, where we’ll learn about the importance of birds in Ancient Egypt, and look at the bird mummies on display, followed by a workshop where we’ll wrap our own “bird” mummies exactly like the Ancient Egyptians did.

Includes workshop instruction, and all materials. Suggested for ages 12 and up. Registration is required Details online at oi.uchicago.edu/events.  $5 for Oriental Institute members; $7 for non-members.
