Science Café - Northwestern University

Science Cafe is a forum for the discussion of important and interesting scientific issues. They are informal and accessible - much more so than a public lecture. It's an opportunity to gather with old and new friends in a relaxed atmosphere while participating in a program of very cool scientific 'stuff'! No cover charge, EVER!

September 25 - Tiny Bubbles In the Mine: The Unlikely Hunt for Dark Matter

Presented by Eric Dahl,
Assistant Professor

Department of Physics and Astronomy, Weinberg College of Arts and Sciences, Northwestern University

Since the 1930's, astrophysicists and cosmologists have been gathering evidence that there is much more to our universe than meets the eye. Today the data is clear -- more than 80% of the matter in the universe is "dark". This dark matter is not made of atoms at all but of something entirely different that, despite being all around us, is nearly impossible to detect.

That "nearly" has inspired researchers to stage experiments under mountains, down abandoned mines, and even deep in the Antarctic ice, all trying to get the first clear detection of a passing dark matter particle. But can a detector inspired by bubbles in beer really succeed where other technologies have not? An international team led by Chicago area scientists thinks it can. Come learn about the dark matter problem and this unlikely solution.
