Guided Reading
of
A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children

By Webb, Gore, Amend and DeVries

Meet with a group of parents for 8 consecutive weeks beginning Thursday, October 2th, 2014 ending November 20th, 2014 to discuss issues of giftedness in a SENG Model Parent Group. We will meet from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The location will be in or near Hinsdale.

Each week we will read one or two chapters of the book A Parent’s Guide to Gifted Children and discuss them as a group in a facilitated discussion format developed by SENG (Social and Emotion Needs of the Gifted).  Additional readings from the gifted press will be provided.  We will cover a variety of topics relevant to raising gifted children, such as maintaining motivation and enthusiasm, avoiding underachievement, coping with intensity, perfectionism, stress, idealism, and depression, making and keeping friends, handling siblings, and more.

The cost for participation will be $250. Additionally, each participant will need to acquire a copy of the book, which is readily available online, or directly from the publisher, Great Potential Press.

The guided reading will be facilitated by Newenka DuMont.  Newenka is a certified SENG Model Parent Group master facilitator and the Illinois SENG (Social and Emotional Needs of the Gifted) Liaison.  She has been leading guided reading groups in our area since 2003.  Newenka was the founding president of the Gifted Education Cooperative (GECO) in Hinsdale, and a member of the Illinois Association for Gifted Children parent affiliate and advocacy committees. She is currently on the board of the Chicago Gifted Community Center, where she is the Western Region Coordinator. More importantly, Newenka is the mother of two gifted, almost grown daughters. Linda Zanieski, CGCC board member, Chicago Gifted Meet-up leader, a veteran of several SMPG groups and mother of a gifted nine-year-old boy, will co-facilitate with Newenka.

If you are interested in participating or in receiving more information, please email Newenka at NewenkaDuMont@ChicagoGiftedCommunity.org.  The group size will be limited to 15 people, on a first come, first served basis. We will need at least 8 people to form a group, so please plan to register no later than September 26th.
