Workshop for Parents - IAGC Convention

  • February 09, 2014
  • 12:00 PM - 4:00 PM
  • Marriott, Naperville
Illinois Association for the Gifted - Workshop for Parents

We have a stimulating afternoon planned for parents from throughout Illinois.

Michael Clay Thompson, author and teacher, will energize us with his passion for “Language and Gifted Learners”. He is an
empowering practitioner and presenter, a fount of practical ideas and inspiration for parents as well as teachers. He writes,
“Language is the core of all content ... In my books I build in thinking taxonomies and whole brain approaches, and I try to
communicate an enthusiasm about learning that makes over-excitability seem normal and right, which it is.”

Vinnie Vrotny, Director of Academic Technology at Quest Academy, will remind us that “Parents Are 21st Century Learners,
Too.” With classroom practice shifting to incorporate 21st Century Learning Skills, many parents do not recognize the experience
as it differs from theirs. This session focuses on strategies on how to “teach” parents about these new methods of learning so that
they will understand the rationale and be supportive partners. Parents will also “learn” strategies on ways that they can keep up
with what’s new including parent education, blogs and social media.

Finally, our afternoon will conclude with our traditional breakout discussion groups, led by experienced facilitators. You will meet and speak with other parents from around the state who share your concerns about specific issues.

Registration required.  IAGC Members $25, Non-members $30.  $5 discount if register by December 8.
